It’s been a while (almost a week!) since my last post. Sorry for being so quiet. Things have been rather hectic this week and I haven’t felt much like getting online during the evenings. On Monday I had a good meeting with my daily supervisor at work. He gave me a new task (how to implement ASL in our group) which ‘ll keep me busy for a while. Nice to have something to focus on for a longer period of time. Monday evening I played bridge; our team won (yay!) so that we now have a real shot at promotion. 3 more matches to go so we can’t afford to slip!
Tuesday was my day off since I had to be at work on Wednesday. We played bridge again on Tuesday evening and scored pretty well for once. A couple of deals kept me up, though. One was the most beautiful Ghestem hand I’ve had in years:
A
AKTxx
KQT9x
xx
My RHO opened 1♠ after which I could bid 3♣ doubled by LHO. Partner passed (and so did RHO). Since we didn’t discuss this situation before I wasn’t sure what partner’s pass ought to mean. I didn’t dare passing since she may have a 5 card ♣ holding with as little as KQxxx. Either way, I decided to bid 3♥, doubled for a lousy -1100 score as the trumps where 7-0
Pass would have been better. Our agreement now is that partner gets to decide in these (rare) situations; pass is preference for ♣ and rdbl asks for the best suit.
The other was a deal where partner pre-empted with 3♦. I was holding something along the lines of:
AKQxxx
AKJTxx
-
AQ
That bid left me in a tight spot to say the least. I wasn’t sure where a constructive 3♥/4♠ bid would lead so I decided to grab the bull by the horns and bid 4♠ (scoring +3). The best contract was 7♦ since partner had something along the lines of:
x
Qxx
AKQJxxx
xx
I guess she forgot that we play the Gambling 3NT which would have worked wonders in this particular situation. I would’ve bid 7♦ without giving it a second thought. Oh well, that’s for next time.
Wednesday morning I went to work and first I had more tests for my evaluation. In the afternoon I had to supervise / organize another brainstorm session with management about our mission statement. That went rather well. Thursday was a busy day with a big party of vts/PN (my employer, ISC, and the Dutch police are now officially one huge organization) and Friday was… well… Friday ![]()
Today was nice ‘n slow, I read a few chapters of my new bridge book (by Marshall Miles) and made another big dinner with a lot of garlic
I must say that I really like uncle Jos’ book! Time to fire up the TV and sit back with a cold one. Cheers!
