Ubuntu Dapper Drake is here!

After several weeks of delay, new new Ubuntu (codename Dapper Drake) was finally released today. Finally! I’ve been dying to get my hands on this new release which includes all sorts of goodies such as a new Gnome, new firefox and so on. I presently maintain three ubuntu boxes (loki@work, Librarian@home and my good old laptop gaspode). Guess I’ll start by updating gaspode tonight.

New goodies and eye candy are, of course, very nice. There’s more to the new ubuntu than that, though. From the release notes:

The new release is titled Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Long Term Support), and has a specific emphasis on the needs of large organisations with both desktop and server versions.

What I conclude from this is that the new ubuntu will be even more stable and robust than older versions (i.e., Breezy) so that it is even more usable on the desktop. Some other interesting quotes:

Ubuntu is freely available, including security updates for five years on servers, with no restrictions on usage and no requirement to purchase support contracts or subscriptions per deployment.

Ubuntu is part of the Debian family of distributions. As such it has an extremely wide selection of software that is instantly available to Ubuntu users, and includes some of the world’s best-regarded software for the management of software updates and changes.

Well, I’m up for a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to using this release for a while! Will post more on the install once I’m done…
